Welcome to the Squaw Creek Kennels Blog.  Our blog intends to be a place where our visitors can gain a little insight as to who we are, what we believe in, the things that are important to us, how we work, what matters to us, and just generall speaking all of those things that make the internet just so impersonal at times.  We'll be updating this fairly regularly, so check back often, or better us, subscribe to our SCKBlog RSS feed.

Why should you think about adopting a mature dog?

I use the word mature because our soon to be retirees are anything but OLD. Old makes them sound as if they have three paws in the ground. Do to the loving care and attention our soon to be retirees have received during their life at SquawCreek Kennels they are mature not old with many good years of love for that right person or family.

Don't get me wrong puppies are oh so cute but may not be for everyone. The following list is dog food for thought on why you might want to consider a mature dog instead of a puppy:

  1. Mature dogs are very appreciative to once again have a loving environment that they settle in quickly and bond with their new owners quickly
  2. There is no guess work with mature dogs. No more growing, no color changes, nothing new it's like here I am with no surprises
  3. A mature dog might require less exercise they are simply happy to please their new owners.
  4. A mature dog will leave your leather shoes alone, won't nibble holes in your underwear or socks
  5. Mature dogs will quickly learn to like the same soap operas you like. They will however become annoyed at the number of commercials or if you constantly change the channels
  6. Mature dogs have studied humans for quite sometime so they know how to please right away
  7. With every wag of a mature dogs tail they are telling you thank-you for the second chance

The list can go on and on. In fact send us your reasons to adopt a more mature dog?

Well time to go love on Dallas who is six, JoDee who is five, and the baby Chester who will be 3.

Brett.

Shout out to the dedicated employees at Squawcreek Kennels

I want to take a moment to give credit where credit is due to the successful operation called Squawcreek Kennels.

Just the other day I was walking the grounds of SCK, ok saying hi to all the wonderful dogs and puppies and had to sit back and take notice of the dedication the staff puts into their jobs. Through rain, sleet, hail, lighting, winds, 100+ heat, snow, ice, wind chill these people are there giving 100 percent to the true masters of the kennel our dogs and puppies.

I had to smile and say well done.

I am so appreciative of everyone's efforts I had to set down and say it in a blog. I would say it in a song but I cannot sing or write songs and do not want our pups howling so putting it in a blog is best.

My name is Brett I help a little with the web and try to answer some of the live chat questions our customers may have and I want our customers to know how much I enjoy the staff at SCK and the day in and day out work they perform so our true masters enjoy themselves so you all can enjoy them.

Thanks everyone,

Picking a Breeder…

I have been going over thoughts about this article for monthes! It has become quite lengthy. Sometimes I wonder if I am going into to much detail? But I think not. I feel this is one of the MOST important articles I'll be writing for the site! Goodness knows, everyone has an opinion, personally, I feel an opinion don't mean much Unless you can explain why you have that opinion & why your opinion is more correct than the next guys'. So that is why it is getting a little lengthy. I want to give a complete explaination for every statement I make and why this is right or wrong. I Have determined this should be a two part article. Part one is interview yourself before you even start looking for a breeder! Here are a few of the "self interview " topics—can I really afford a puppy or dog? Is your housing situation suitable to have a puppy? Do you own a home, live in an apartment, are you allowed pets? Do you truly have time for a puppy? Maybe an adult would be better? Pet ownership is a HUGE, LONG TERM, COMMITMENT. One that should not be taken on Until you have taken into consideration many, many, many, factors! But at least here is a little food for thought to read until I get the article done!

Memorial Day Weekend

Wow what wonderful weather we had in central Iowa this past weekend.

I helped plant flowers, trees, and played with puppies. This time I played with Cavashons. The Cavashons I played with are on our website. Such sweet little puppies, they took all of five minutes to warm up to me and begin chewing on a button. This is what I love about Squawcreek Kennels the puppies, the puppies mothers/fathers, staff, owner and of course our customers make the experience such a joy.

Planted the flowers to help give a homey touch to the place, planted trees so our friends could have even more shade, I looked for other opportunities to go "Green". However, with all the precious rain we have had going green is quite easy this time of year.

Back to the puppies cause it's all about the puppies several found loving homes this past weekend.

Also, something that is near and dear to the owner's heart is finding homes for our retirees. Found a couple homes. If any of you reading this blog or clicking through our website know someone or some organization that would like to know more about our retirees please let us know.

Well that's all for now,

TY

What makes me happy

Last week, weekend, and this weekend proved to be wonderful! Not because I sold some puppies, because,  I have done this so many years I get bunches of referrals & repeat customers and now with the new website, selling a puppy is common. It does make the staff & I feel good to see the happiness & joy on the faces of the new puppy owners/families.  However, what REALLY thrills us, and especially me, is when we find adoptive homes for the "kids" retiring from the kennel or, a puppy with an imperfection.  So many times, they end up being one of my personal pets or one of the staff's.   I got homes for 3 adults & a home for a puppy that had a front foot that wasn't just right!!!!  THAT'S what REALLY makes me HAPPY!!!!!  Granted, one of the joys of having a kennel I can have all the pets I want!!! I mean really, how can you put a limit on all the unconditional love and joy that dogs give? Well, I guess, realistically, my house & the staff's, are only so big. Hehe

It amazes me how long it sometimes takes to find a family for an adult. You can see how loving, smart, and beautiful they are already. Yet people would rather spend $500 or more for a puppy as to take a nearly free, sweet adult??  Go figure??

One of the greatest things I want the website to do, besides being educational & informative, is make it easier to find families for the adults.. I believe it will! My camera takes like minute long videos. People can watch & see how sweet, obedient, happy loving they are!!!

Many people don't realize how much better off they would be. If they have busy work, schedules etc an adult would be a much wiser choice! Puppies are sweet as can be but, they are little peeing, pooping, chewing machines. They are also a huge responsibility & require a huge amount of time to grow up happy healthy & properly trained. My adult "kids" have given so many people so much joy & happiness with the puppies they have raised. It's my responsibility to make sure they have homes that will give them many years of love in return!! So, be watching for the new adoption center on the site, and testimonials of some of the lucky people have had the joy of getting one of our adoptees!!!

Missing my baby Chester

I have a sweet 2-year-old Italian Greyhound named Chester.  I always said I would not have three dogs, a puppy, or an Italian Greyhound.  Puppy's pee and poop in the house until they are trained.

Well that all changed about 2.5 years ago due to playing with puppies here at Squaw Creek Kennels.  I came across an Italian Greyhound (soon to be named Chester) that had blue fur and grey blue eyes.  I brought him into the house to play and he looked at me I looked at him he put his head right above my heart and my heart melted.  You get the picture.

At this point, I was not as knowledgeable of puppies and dogs as I am now so I made every mistake in training.  Mr. Ed of SCK kindly provided words of encouragement on training, crating, etc. and this made my experience quite enjoyable.

Alas, I went home for vacation and could not bring Chester.  Was away from him for almost two weeks and could not stand it any longer.  So back to the kennel I go and have spent the last couple of days spoiling Chester (which he deserves).

Last night when we went to bed Chester curled up beside me and put his head on my heart as to say I missed you to and am glad you are home daddy.

I love you Chester, your daddy.

Teaching an old dog new tricks

I hope everyone reads this and they will understand why I haven't been getting back to them as quick as I would like.

My nephew is a computer genius. Everything we have is state of the art programs he's designed. We have space age technology!!! Only problem is, I have caveman age computer skills. We have a new program he designed that keeps track of everyone we ever have any kind of communication/ interaction with about any puppy. He has been trying to teach me how to use it & all its functions.

Uhhhhh it took me long enough to learn how to send and receive emails. I know he makes things so simple any child could do it. I just hadn't sunk into my brain yet. So I haven't been getting emails answered as quickly as I should etc.

Well finally, I had that proverbial "click "in my head & it's finally making sense!!! I still have a ways to go. & several correspondences to organize & catch up on, but I am getting there!!

It will make everything much easier, organized & efficient!! Ultimately we will be able to help everyone wanting a Squaw Creek puppy in an even timelier & efficient manner!

Hang with me folks because you really can teach an old dog new tricks.. Just takes a little longer!! If I am not getting back to you quick enough while learning this new stuff. Contact me the old fashion way.. By phone!!

Thanks to everyone for your patience. Looking forward to helping everyone find the new little 4 legged family member that is just right for you!!

One Min Pin Two Escape Artist

About 2 ½ years ago I decided Dallas needed a playmate. As mentioned in a prior blog Ed once again came to my rescue and brought me a female Min Pin I named JoDee. Well as you would expect there is a story behind this lovely new family member of mine.

Come to find out JoDee is an escape artist. She was owned by neighbors across the street from Squawcreek Kennels and kept getting out so they gave her to Ed. Ed soon found out that she could just about get out of any cage. So the kind hearted man that he is gave her to me. Well folks let me tell you I have a very nice deck, chain link fenced in back yard. It was like none of those things existed. I plugged holes under the fence, took yard stakes to tighten the bottoms of the fence, etc. I was so proud of myself because for two weeks she did not get out.

Well that was short lived. I just could not figure out where she was getting out. I can see my deck from one of my bedroom windows. I saw her jump up on the 4 inch ledge trot across the length of the deck and jump. I could not believe what I had just seen. Well I put foil up on the ledge did not work; I put carpet tack strips on the ledge. I discovered JoDee knows how to jump up on the ledge and miss the tack strips.

Finally, I got lattice boards and put across the outer part of my deck (cheap thin kind) she bit a hole and jumped off the deck. Finally, I broke down and bought the good lattice boards and so far knock on wood that has done the trick.

Anyway, JoDee is the calmest, sweetest min pin I have ever seen. Well I have to go she is up on a chair taking one of her nails and trying to pick the lock to the front door.

Take Care,

Brett R.

How did I meet Mr. Ed?

I have known Ed for several years.

I have had Dallas for about 5.5 years with my research going back 4 more years. Somewhere in those previous 9.5 years I ran across the man we call Mr. Ed. When we think of Mr. Ed for us with a couple years on us we think of a horse. Will let me tell you I am so happy our Mr. Ed does not sell horses they would not house train well nor would they fit in my house.

Anyway like thousands of you I found my way to the number one dog kennel/breeder in Iowa to ask questions. Ed took the time to talk with and explain my different options and so forth that I was instantly impressed.

Well a couple years ago I was with other friends at a local campsite and I heard a familiar voice talking about dogs. Well I ventured over to that particular camp fire and it was Ed. I just sat back and listened as many campers picked his brain on anything from A to Z about dogs.

This is where my friendship started and where I offered my help as our brilliant website was still in the planning stages. Time flies and low and behold I now have a part in the re-birth of SquawCreek Kennels.

I have learned I have to be careful saying things to Ed. I mentioned in one of our campfire chats I had a min pin (Dallas) and thought he needed a play mate. Well the next weekend Ed brought the most lovable female min pin. Well her name is Jo Dee after my mom and grandmother. My mom was so happy to have a dog named after her. LOL

Anyway Dallas is a daddy's boy and tolerated Jo Dee and that was all. So that got me to thinking………………………………………….
